Avril (mum) is remaining home for the summer and it is our second year hosting, we are loving every minute. We have 4 adorable children, Pearse (who will be 6 in June), he loves football and swimming, daughter Scarlett (who will be 5 in September). Scarlett can swim independently. Our son Arthur (who will be 3 in October) and Harrison who was born in October 2025 and will be almost 1. It is a busy and dynamic home but we love every minute of it. We don’t generally watch TV (or a limited amount) and keep the children busy as much as possible.

This was our first year to host a boy (13) and our sons really loved it too, so we have since decided to open up to boys as well.

Our Region

So a little about our region, we live in a beautiful town center townhouse in Claremorris which is less than a minute walk from public transport, gyms, and shops. It is very safe here. We are very close to the countryside also.

The secondary school (all girls school) is a 10 minute walk away. For academic places, we typically drop our students in the morning, and they walk home with their friends in the evenings.

More about us is that we are a kind and engaging family who very much enjoys hosting! While helping improve English, we aim to leave a lasting memory as we see the trip as one of personal growth as can be seen from our reviews ☺️.

As a family, we eat together every day.

As part of the activities, they include cooking (I usually cook everything from scratch) and I love to teach.

After meals, we play games or talk together. Our children can be quite entertaining. We now also go to the soccer park regularly and swimming pool (a lot!)

Weekdays, there are different parks to visit (2) within walking distance which we can visit with our children. We could also bring a picnic.

Public transport is walking distance from our home (only a 2-minute walk to the train or bus) so easy access to places around Ireland.

Close by is a riding school (5 minute drive) https://hanleyshorses.com/ and a golf course.

Walking distance (1 minute) are swimming pools, tennis courts, handball alley, squash courts, youth club (non-name club). There are scouts here and lots of gym classes again within walking distance such as Pilates, yoga.

Our home is attached to the GAA pitch which frequently has native Irish Gaelic matches to watch.

Claremorris theatre is a 2 minute walk from our home.

There is also Moorhall and other local cultural sites to visit such as Turlough house, which is a local museum.

Can consider a visit to the grounds of Ashford Castle and sign up for a boat trip.

Eniscrone has a blue flag beach and seaweed baths.

A trip to Galway is usually part of the excursions which includes a trip to the museum, visiting some shops to get gifts for family, and trying one of the restaurants there. Always get lovely photos on that trip and I stay around as a tour guide.

If you wish to have English classes, we have a nanny so private lessons can be provided in the mornings.

We will ask you to pay a 30% deposit by credit card at the time of booking. The remaining balance will be due 6 weeks before the start of the stay, payable by credit card, Chèques Vacances, or bank transfer.

Train or flight travel not included

The journey to your host family (plane, train, or bus) is at your expense... and that's good news! It allows you to freely choose your travel dates based on the most affordable prices and the schedules that suit you.

However, your host family may offer to pick you up from the train station or airport (either for free or as an optional service).

Stay of 3 weeks

Our 15 year old daughter Margot spent 3 weeks with Avril's family, it was her first experience. She was delighted, she made a lot of activities: play with the children, cooking, visiting things (with the family or alone by bus). The house is in the town of Claremorris so you can easily do things (shopping, park, swimming-pool...). And there are beautiful landscapes around. She was able to improve a lot her English and had many discussions with the family. So, we strongly recommend this family!

Stay of 2 weeks

Hello! I'm Chloé, I'm 18, I'm a French student and I stayed 2 weeks in Avril's house during summer 2025. I recommend a lot this family if you want to discover lots of things! I really enjoyed the family! Avril and Paddy are kind people and we had lots of discussions every day about different subjects, it's really great if you want to improve your English in different fields! You are really free in this house and you feel good really quick, they will help you for everything if you need! During your moments at home, you can talk, play with the children or take some rest in your bedroom if you want time for you. Stay downstairs with the family is of course the best option for a joyful evening! I liked to go outside with the children (park + playground), it's a moment of English and you also meet kind people. For the excursions, County Mayo and County Galway are really beautiful with the Connemara’s landscapes. I liked both excursions with the family and excursions by myself with the Au Pair/other student hosted. Avril and Paddy are really open-minded and they will bring you to many places to visit and always listen to your projects helping you to achieve them. The transports (both trains and buses) are near the house and you can trust the network! I just have to say: enjoy your trip in Avril’s house! Chloé
